Great (?), AI can now do my job...

Christmas plagued by ChatGPT-chat? No clue what it is?: Voila, a 2min rundown...

What is it in plain English?

In short, there is a totally free AI chatbot that feels like it has human intelligence. You are having a message convo with a robot. But it's not clunky. IT IS GENUINELY SMART. Importantly, it's not just good for a chin-wag... it can write stories & poems, ideate on complex philosophy, write code, explain intricate concepts, and—with the right prompt—do your job for you... It's name is ChatGPT.

“ChatGPT is incredibly limited, but good enough at some things to create a misleading impression of greatness,”

- Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI (December 10, 2022).

Slightly more technical explanation (feel free to skip)

It's a large language model (it has 175 bn parameters), that is optimised for dialogue, called ChatGPT (Generative Pre-trained Transformer) and has been released by a company called OpenAI. It uses a recent evolution of OpenAI's GPT-3 model to generate believable dialogue in response to a short writing prompt. Interestingly, the outputs are the result of text prediction—not actual understanding. I.e, it’s simply using the example data it was trained with - and the previous words in a sentence - to predict what word a human would most likely use next. The sample data is current up to late 2021, so ChatGPT might be smart but some of its opinions are a bit last year tbh... In spite of Sam Altman's humility, just over a week after its public launch, ChatGPT garnered more than 1m users.

What's it genuinely good at?

What might it be good at soon?

What does this all mean going forward?

OpenAI’s mission is to ensure that artificial general intelligence benefits all of humanity. But will AI be able to do our jobs? It seems logical that as the scope of AI's competence increases - the need for human’s in many jobs / tasks will be gradually (or rapidly) diminished.

Global AI investment: $12.75m in 2015, $93.5bn in 2021, $422.37bn by 2028.

In the short-to-mid term this might be mildly (or wildly) disruptive as people are displaced from their occupational roles. For example - being an SEO content writer is likely to change significantly as AI writing tools continue to evolve, grow & intermingle. The SEO content space could shift on its axis, as writing becomes increasingly supplemented by software. In many cases, the advancements of AI likely lead to a decrease in demand for human skill. In other cases, it may simply result in a shift in the way tasks are executed (SEO content writer, to SEO content curator/editor).

Whilst the rise of AI presents challenges, it also presents opportunities to explore new areas and applications of the technology. The crucial response to this shifting landscape is to be open-minded, and to get moving as soon as you see indication of change on the horizon. Growth seems to happen the fastest, when occurring outside of the comfort zone :)

Some brilliant tweets:

Thanks to Ed Prior for inadvertent help. This article was not written by/using ChatGPT ;)
